Reading

  • Fourth grade students average score in reading was 227, 6 points higher than the national average of 221.
  • Wyoming's fourth grade students average score of 227 was:
    • Lower than those in 3 states/jurisdictions;
    • Higher than those in 34 states/jurisdictions;
    • Not significantly different from those in 14 states/jurisdictions.
  • Eighth grade students average score in reading was 269, 4 points higher than the national average of 265.
  • Wyoming's eighth grade students average score of 269 was:
    • Lower than those in 7 states/jurisdictions;
    • Higher than those in 23 states/jurisdictions;
    • Not significantly different from those in 21 states/jurisdictions.

Mathematics

  • Fourth grade students average score in mathematics was 248, 9 points higher than the national average of 239.
  • Wyoming's fourth grade students average score of 248 was:
    • Lower than those in 0 states/jurisdictions;
    • Higher than those in 44 states/jurisdictions;
    • Not significantly different from those in 8 states/jurisdictions.
  • Eighth grade students average score in mathematics was 289, 7 points higher than the national average of 282.
  • Wyoming's eighth grade students average score of 289 was:
    • Lower than those in 5 states/jurisdictions;
    • Higher than those in 36 states/jurisdictions;
    • Not significantly different from those in 11 states/jurisdictions.

Students who don’t read proficiently by third grade are four times likelier to drop out of high school (Annie E. Casey Foundation) and two out of three students who don’t read proficiently by fourth grade are likely to end up in jail or on welfare (Literacy Inc.).
